Hiking & Walking Trails

Below are a few of my favorite trails. For a full list of trails click here.

Waterrock Knob
Water Rock Knob is located on the Blue Ridge Parkway Mile Post 451.2. (moderate/strenuous),
This trail is 0.5 mile to the top, then hike back down to the parking area to watch the sunset. It does not get better than this view! It is very easy to hop onto the Blue Ridge Parkway from the cabin… just go back down to Soco Rd and take Soco Rd heading west for about 5.5 miles. Take the Blue Ridge Parkway Entrance on the right heading towards Asheville. Once you get to milepost 451.2, Waterrock Knob will be a turn-off on the left… follow that road up to the parking area.

Cataloochee Valley Trails
Hiking in Cataloochee Valley is a great place to go for hiking and viewing elk. This area is a part of the Smoky Mountain National Park… but you can only access it through a back entrance.

Little Cataloochee Trail – This 10-mile out-and-back trail follows an old road past historic cabins and a church and is perfect for backpacking, hiking and horseback riding.

Rough Fork Trail – This is a 12-mile out-and-back trail and is considered moderately difficult. This is a great trail for hiking, horseback riding and trail running, and it’s unlikely you’ll encounter many other people while out exploring.

Boogerman Trail – This 7-mile trail is considered a challenging route but is a popular trail for hiking and trail running.

Pretty Hollow Gap Trail – This is a 11-mile out-and-back trail and is considered a challenging route. Enjoy backpacking, camping, and fishing along this trail.

Sam’s Summits Loop Trail – Perfect to hike in the winter!
Spend the morning exploring the perfect winter hike. Head up Hwy 215/Lake Logan Rd to access the Sam’s Summits Loop Trail, located in the Shining Rock Wilderness area of the Pisgah National Forest. As this area borders the Blue Ridge Parkway, it is often inaccessible via the parkway in the winter due to road closures, but the trail head for Sam’s Summits is accessible year-round. A free beautifully illustrated guide is available exclusively at Haywood Visitors Center providing directions, an overview of the area, multiple trail paths, and other tips for hiking the area.

Fishing

Jonathan Creek is perfect for trout fishing. Jonathan Creek runs along Soco Road in Maggie Valley. Map of the creek.
